There are more ways than ever to create value for commercial clean energy customers.

From 1 October, the expanded SRES extended to eligible mid-scale solar above 100 kW and up to 1 MW. In NSW, the new PDRS battery incentives are strengthening the business case for commercial storage. Equipment pricing has improved, and the growing role of batteries and energy optimisation is opening up new possibilities.

It’s creating a significant opportunity for C&I, but also changing what it takes to put together a great project.

There’s more to consider across engineering, grid approval, incentives, modelling, optimisation and finance. Particularly in NSW, the industry is still working through some of the practical requirements around PDRS including planning approvals such as CDCs or DAs.

For installers who understand how to navigate these moving pieces and know when to bring the right specialists into the conversation, getting it right can become a competitive advantage.

More opportunity. More to consider.

Commercial solar is relatively well understood. Generation can be modelled using years of weather data and the process from design through to installation is familiar.

Storage opens up a broader value stack. A battery can potentially create value through peak-demand reduction, greater solar self-consumption, energy arbitrage, wholesale market participation and optimisation. How it’s designed, controlled and maintained can all affect the outcome.

So the conversation is no longer simply: How big should the system be and how much energy will it generate?

It’s also: How can we get the most value from the energy this business generates, stores and uses?

In NSW, installers are also working through the practical requirements of PDRS. Depending on the project, that can mean planning approvals such as CDC or DA engineering, grid approval and certification alongside the scheme’s own compliance requirements.

The incentive may improve the business case, but understanding the whole project is essential to knowing what really stacks up.

Getting it right can be a competitive advantage

The answer isn’t for every installer to become an expert in everything.

Today’s C&I opportunity can bring together: Engineering + grid + incentives + modelling + optimisation + O&M + finance.

Unlike a solar system, the customer relationship doesn’t necessarily end when the installation is complete.

How a battery is controlled and optimised affects the value it delivers. Equipment may require ongoing servicing to maintain warranties and performance. Energy markets change. Customer loads change.

In that sense, a battery is a product wrapped in a service.

For installers, that creates opportunities for moving the relationship beyond a single transaction

SRES + PDRS create a reason to revisit the pipeline

With SRES and PDRS underway, now is a particularly good time to revisit existing opportunities. A previous solar proposal might now warrant a broader solar + storage conversation. With incentives, a project that didn’t meet the customer’s required payback may look different today. An existing solar customer may have an opportunity to add storage.

The important thing is to look at the whole business case, not just the incentive.

Finance is part of the picture

Funding is another piece that is best considered early.

We’ve all seen proposals with what appears to an amazing business case, but time after time, customers are delaying saying “yes”.

In truth, energy management is not core for most organisations (they tend to focus their efforts on sales, marketing and HR management). Larger projects can also create working-capital challenges for installers through equipment deposits, progress payments and project timelines.

Australian Government’s Community Sporting Club Energy Grants

Community sporting clubs across Australia have an exciting opportunity to upgrade their facilities and reduce energy costs through the Australian Government’s Game On: Teaming Up for Climate Action program.

The grant is expected to support only around 500 clubs nationally and applications open 1 July 2026 and close on 28 July 2026 – so early preparation is essential. Below are answers to common questions about the grant and eligibility.

What is the Game On: Teaming Up for Climate Action program?

The Australian Government has launched this initiative to help community sporting clubs reduce energy costs and improve sustainability. The program will deliver $35.2 million over two funding rounds.

It will help community sports clubs lower power bills and free up more money for sport, facilities and local programs.

What projects can the grant help pay for?

The grant is expected to cover:

Solar PV systems
Battery storage
LED lighting upgrades
Energy-efficient HVAC systems
Energy audits
Other upgrades that improve climate resilience and reduce energy use

These upgrades can help clubs reduce electricity bills and better prepare for extreme weather conditions.

How much funding is available?

Eligible clubs can apply for one-off grants between $25,000 and $100,000. The government expects funding to support approximately 500 clubs across Australia, so clubs are encouraged to prepare early.

What if our project costs more than the grant amount?

Many clubs choose to install a larger solar and battery system to maximise long-term savings. If your project costs more than the grant covers, the remaining amount may be funded through a Smart Ease payment plan.

This allows clubs to:

Spread repayments over time
Start saving on energy bills sooner

When can my club apply for funding?

The first funding round open 1 July 2026 and close on 28 July 2026. Because there are only 500 clubs likely to get funded overall, it’s recommended that clubs get in early.

As our Operations Manager, Renato plays a key role in keeping the business running smoothly behind the scenes. From process improvement and settlements to team leadership and customer outcomes, he works closely with our channel partners, customers, and internal teams to ensure we continue delivering a seamless finance experience.

With a strong background in asset finance and commercial lending, Renato brings a practical, solutions-focused mindset and a genuine passion for building strong relationships and efficient processes.

Now that he’s settled in, we thought it was time to get to know him a little better.

What has been the highlight of your time at Smart Ease so far?

One of the biggest highlights so far has been the opportunity to broaden my operational leadership experience and gain knowledge across multiple areas of the business through the “deep dive” process.

I’ve really enjoyed being involved in process improvement initiatives, supporting credit administration, collections, and post-settlement functions, as well as people management and learning and development. It’s been rewarding helping build stronger structure and accountability within the team.

What gets you out of bed in the morning and excited to come to work?

I’m excited to come to work because I’m still learning the business, and I enjoy picking things up quickly. Every day feels like an opportunity to grow, learn, improve my understanding of operations, and become more confident in how I support the team.

What’s your go-to ‘pick-me-up’ song?

Federal Budget 2026: What it means for solar, energy efficiency and EV adoption

The Federal Government’s latest Budget included several announcements relevant to businesses across the solar, battery storage, energy efficiency and EV sectors.

Two are of particular note: the permanent extension of the Instant Asset Write-Off scheme and changes to electric vehicle Fringe Benefits Tax concessions.

Both measures continue to support investment in electrification, energy efficiency and lower operating costs for businesses.

Permanent Instant Asset Write-Off extended

One of the key Budget announcements is the Government’s decision to make the $20,000 Instant Asset Write-Off (IAWO) permanent for eligible small businesses.

Businesses with turnover under $10 million will continue to be able to immediately deduct eligible equipment costing less than $20,000. The threshold applies for each purchase of equipment, allowing businesses to purchase multiple eligible assets under the scheme.

With the scheme now permanent, businesses have much more clarity when planning their future equipment purchases.

How will this benefit your commercial solar business?

For smaller commercial projects under $20,000, customers can write off the cost of equipment in the same financial year the system is purchased and installed, reducing tax liability immediately and improving cash flow.

The scheme is particularly suited to smaller solar installations or upgrades, battery storage, HVAC equipment and EV charging infrastructure.

EV Fringe Benefits Tax changes

The Budget confirmed changes to the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) treatment of electric vehicles (EVs).

The Government will phase out the current full FBT exemption and move to a permanent 25% FBT discount for eligible EVs.

From 1 April 2027, EVs over $75,000 will receive a 25% FBT discount, while EVs at or under $75,000 will continue to receive a full FBT exemption.

From 1 April 2029, the full FBT exemption for EVs at or under $75,000 will only apply to arrangements that commenced before that date. After this, all eligible EVs will receive the 25% FBT discount.

How will this benefit your commercial solar business?

While the Fringe Benefit Tax concession is being reduced over time, EVs remain significantly cheaper to operate than petrol vehicles.

As a result, demand for EV charging infrastructure is expected to remain strong across commercial and industrial sectors.

The value proposition becomes even stronger when EV charging is integrated with solar and battery storage. Combining onsite solar generation with battery-backed EV charging can help businesses reduce electricity and fuel costs and fleet operating expenses.

Smart Ease is expanding our offering. Businesses can now access $0 upfront commercial finance for Electric Vehicles (EVs) through Smart Ease Payment Plans, making it easier to invest in EVs for employees or transition entire commercial fleets.

Growing demand for EVs

As the war in the Middle East wages on and fuel prices climb with no end in sight, the need to electrify our homes and businesses has never been more urgent.

And Australians are acting with urgency.

Just last month, online searches for EVs on carsales tripled while EV sales jumped 42% MoM – despite a 3% drop in total new car sales. Even e-bike sales are surging, with some retailers reporting a three-fold increase in recent weeks.

This growing demand is not likely to be a blip.

According to new forecasts released by treasurer Jim Chalmers, ongoing conflict in the region could result in years of elevated fuel prices, push inflation higher and higher, and potentially even slash $16.5bn from the economy by 2027.

The move toward energy independence

The disruption to global energy markets has exposed just how much risk businesses take on by remaining fully dependent on fossil fuels. Especially when clean energy, powered by local resources like sun and wind, is increasingly accessible and far less exposed to global instability.

As the conflict in Iran strengthens the case for energy independence, demand for cleaner, more efficient technology is accelerating. In Australia, as mentioned, EV uptake is already climbing. Overseas, the trend is even clearer. Heat pump sales in the UK jumped 51% in just three weeks, while solar installers in Germany report a 30% surge in enquiries.

Minaret College leads by example with major solar investment

When Minaret College first opened its doors in 1992, there were just 22 students enrolled. Since then, it has grown to become the largest co-educational Islamic school in Melbourne’s southeast, with 2,500 students across three campuses.

However, that growth has not come without cost. Over the years, Minaret College has experienced a steep and sometimes unpredictable rise in energy expenditure. As a not-for-profit, these increasing operational costs have placed additional strain on the school.

This prompted Minaret College’s Executive Principal, Mohammad Taksim, to explore switching to solar power last year.

Taksim reached out to commercial solar experts Smart Solar Solutions to visit the Springvale and Officer campuses in mid-2025 to assess their suitability for solar and the feasibility of the project.

The main buildings at both campuses feature large, flat roofs fully exposed to the sun. Combined with the school’s high daytime energy use, this meant solar systems would be highly effective at both locations, capturing solar energy throughout the day to power the school with minimal waste.

For optimal performance, the Smart Solar Solutions team recommended substantial systems at both sites. The Springvale campus received 360 Jinko solar panels integrated with three Sungrow inverters, while the smaller Officer campus received 270 Jinko solar panels with two Sungrow inverters.

The only remaining consideration was the cost of the project, which was significant due to the size of the systems.

Fortunately, Smart Solar Solutions is a Smart Ease–accredited installer and was able to offer the college a $0 upfront Smart Ease Payment Plan to fund the installation. This allowed Minaret College to preserve its cash reserves and instead use monthly energy-bill savings to help pay for the system over time.

It was an easy decision.

With the help of Smart Solar Solutions, Taksim applied online for a 60-month Payment Plan with Smart Ease. As a not-for-profit school, the application easily met credit requirements and was quickly approved.

Both systems were installed in the second half of 2025 and are now fully operational.

For Minaret College, this clean energy project represents a significant milestone. Alongside supporting sustainability goals and setting a strong example for students, the school is now benefiting from a substantial reduction in operating costs and a clearer pathway for future growth.

Tripod Farmers powers sustainable farming with large-scale solar

Salads and fresh vegetable producer Tripod Farmers is a fourth-generation family enterprise based in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. In its 37 years of operation, the farm has earned a strong reputation for its focus on high-quality produce and its embrace of innovative methods that drive both efficiency and sustainability.

In 2024, Tripod Farmers became one of the first farms in Australia to adopt the AI-powered LaserWeeder, a groundbreaking technology that uses artificial intelligence to differentiate weeds from crops and eliminate them. The result is minimal need for herbicides and a significant sustainability win. In 2025, the farm made another major step forward by investing in two commercial solar systems at its Bacchus Marsh site.

Tripod Farmers engaged Choice Energy to design and install the systems.

The first is a 450kW solar array comprising 982 Trina Solar panels and four Fronius inverters. The second is a 245.50kW system featuring 491 Trina Solar panels and two Fronius inverters. Together, the installations represent a significant renewable-energy investment that will help power the farm’s operations, reduce energy bills and lower carbon emissions.

For Tripod Farmers, cutting carbon does not just align with its values – it also makes strong business sense. The farm supplies produce across Australia to independent grocers, restaurants and major supermarkets such as Coles. With mandatory climate reporting now in place for large companies like Coles, being a low-emissions supplier provides a clear advantage by helping those retailers reduce and report their Scope 3 emissions.

To make the transition to solar more accessible, the project was funded through a Smart Ease Payment Plan arranged by Choice Energy. The 60-month plan allowed Tripod Farmers to install both systems for $0 upfront, and use energy-bill savings generated by the solar systems to help cover repayments over time.

This approach meant the farm could move ahead with a large-scale sustainability project while preserving capital for other areas of the business.

And the investment has already gained recognition. Tripod Farmers was acknowledged for its sustainability efforts with an award at the The Weekly Times Coles 2025 Farmer of the Year Awards, further reinforcing its reputation as an innovative and forward-thinking Australian farming business.

Rutherglen Convent cuts energy costs with smart solar & storage investment

In the heart of Victoria’s wine country town of Rutherglen stands the almost 100-year-old Gothic-style brick fortress known as Rutherglen Convent. Once a convent, school and boarding house, the historic building has recently undergone an extensive restoration and now operates as a working brewery, hospitality and wedding venue, in addition to being an 11-bedroom Airbnb.

When all business activities are running simultaneously, often during school holidays and peak tourist seasons, the Convent’s energy consumption can rise significantly.

To help manage these growing energy costs, owner Ben Kennedy began exploring the possibility of installing solar at the property.

Knowing that installing solar panels on the roof of a heritage-listed building could be complex, Kennedy contacted commercial solar specialists Energy Control to assess the site and propose a suitable solution.

After reviewing the building, the Energy Control team recommended a carefully designed solar system comprising 103 Longi panels and two Solax inverters. The system was sized to deliver meaningful energy savings while ensuring the panels would not negatively impact the building’s historic façade.

To maximise the value of the system, Energy Control also recommended integrating battery storage. The 22 Solax batteries allow excess solar energy generated during the day to be stored and used later, particularly during the evening when Airbnb guests are using heating, cooling, lighting and other energy-intensive appliances.

Alongside the technical design, Energy Control also helped Kennedy navigate the most cost-effective way to fund the project. The team advised taking advantage of the federal battery rebate to reduce the total project cost, while also making use of a $0 upfront Smart Ease Payment Plan to maintain a healthy cash flow.

The 84-month plan allowed Rutherglen Convent to install both the solar and battery system without a large upfront expense. Instead, the business can repay the system over time with manageable monthly instalments, supported by the energy-bill savings generated by the system.

Installation was completed in the second half of 2025, just in time to support the Convent through the high energy demands of the summer season.

Today, the solar and battery system is helping Rutherglen Convent better manage its energy costs while supporting the sustainability of the historic property. By combining renewable energy with smart financing, the venue has found a practical way to protect both its bottom line and its future.

SA farm’s savvy battery investment

In mid-2025, the federal government announced a highly attractive new battery rebate offering 30% off storage systems until 1 January 2026, when the discount would begin to decline. The rebate is set to taper each year until 2030, when it will be fully retired. 

With batteries becoming increasingly financially viable, solar feed-in tariffs offering less return, and this new temporary rebate on the table, South Australian farm owner Zach Trethewey decided it was time to invest in energy storage to complement his existing solar system.

He engaged commercial solar experts AllState Solar to deliver the project. 

AllState Solar proposed installing two 60kWh batteries, providing the farm with 120kWh of solar storage. This setup would maximise onsite solar consumption and further increase monthly energy savings – but also came with a significant upfront cost.

To overcome that barrier, AllState Solar suggested that Zach use a $0 upfront Smart Ease Payment Plan to finance the project. 

By August 2025, installation of the battery system was complete.

Zach’s farm is now powered primarily by clean solar energy. During the day, electricity is supplied directly from the farm’s solar panels, while any excess energy is stored in the new battery system for use at night. 

By being proactive with his storage investment, Zach has reduced the farm’s grid reliance and significantly lowered monthly energy bills.

Best of all, he achieved all this without spending any cash upfront – and secured a 30% discount on his equipment.
